Title of talk:
St Brice's Day Massacre - 13 November 1002
Dr Matthew Townend
examined the evidence for the so-called St Brice's
Day Massacre of 13th November 1002, when King Ethelred 'ordered to
be
slain all the Danish men who were in England'. He reviewed the main
sources for the event (the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, later Latin
chronicles, and a contemporary charter), and explored the massacre's
likely motivation, extent and historicity.
