Emigration via Liverpool 1850-1924

How did the Scandinavian emigrants travel?

across the North Sea to Hull and then train to Liverpool.
The voyage to
Hull was usually in a 500 dwt sail/steamer vessel.
Across the
Atlantic, a journey of 7010 days, was usually in a 5000 dwt steamer.
A vast difference in size and comfort at sea.

Most young people were driven by ambition, but poverty and lack of prospects also played a vital role in their decision making
Most emigrants were in ages 15-35. A total of 20% of
Sweden’s population was lost during a 75 years period. One out of 20 Americans has Scandinavian background.
